General Information On Moving

The general information on moving that is provided here will help you to make a stress-free relocation with your family. If you plan your move and take care of all the important details in advance, you will be able to avoid the usual last minute panic and can enjoy settling down in your new home.

A moving checklist will help you to remember all the important actions you need to take in the weeks before you relocate.

Obtain at least three moving quotes in writing and check the credentials and reputation of the household movers before you select one of them. Don’t choose a home mover only on the basis of the lowest bid.

House movers are required to have a published tariff that includes information about available services and rates, along with rules and regulations based on which the applicable charges are assessed. This tariff must be provided to customers on request.

The order for service is a list of services that the moving company will perform for you. It will include the dates when your possessions will be collected and delivered at the destination.

The Bill of Lading is a contract between you and the home movers and is also a receipt for your possessions. A partially completed copy of the Bill of Lading must be provided to you at the point of origin.

The Inventory is a receipt that includes a detailed list of the items being shipped. Check it carefully to see if you agree with the comments about the condition of your possessions. Keep the Bill of Lading and Inventory safely.

Interstate movers must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). You can get information about them by entering their details on the Company Snapshot page of the FMCSA website. An interstate moving company is required to give you the booklet entitled Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move and to provide details of its Dispute Settlement Program.

Check your possessions as they are unloaded from the truck at the destination. Report any lost or damaged items and provide details on the Inventory before you sign it. You can obtain a claim form from the mover and submit it within 9 months of delivery. A claim can also be submitted in writing without the claim form.

Please fill out the form provided here to get free moving estimates from pre-screened residential movers in your area. This is a free offer and there are no commitments involved at all. Your contact details will not be disclosed to anyone without your permission.
